about

Included in this download is Sparky Grinstead's original Rodent to Rodent album, which is available for preview at sparkygrinstead.bandcamp.com

The "Rodent to Rodent" album was recorded twice - once in mid 2010 at home, very quickly, and once again in December of 2010 and January of 2011. The final album uses some material from each set of sessions. The initial home session was done hurredly, many arrangement decisions were made on the fly. While the final sessions were more preplanned, in many cases efforts were made to retain the hurried feeling. My live band stepped up to the plate to fill in the sound and re-record many of my original band parts, with Ken Mahru stepping up to simultaneously engineer and play drums during the initial session.

Sparky originally gave me only a CD with the title "Rodent to Rodent" scrawled on it, so I was forced to guess wildly at the lyrics, titles and - most importantly - the meanings of the songs. In many cases, my new arrangements were inspired by a mis-heard lyric or a mis-interpereted origin, but I had very little difficulty discerning which songs were directly about my mother. In general, those particular songs wound up being more similar overall to Sparky's original versions.
