Paranoia Molecule Aloud

from Tension & Release by Matthew Joseph Payne

about

During Weekly Beats 2014, my strategy for completing the year was to do the second half of the year in retrograde - making a track related somehow to the track from the week mirroring the current week on the calendar, after reaching the halfway point. The first retrograde track had to be related to "Pandatron 20X8", so I took that songs primary melody, which was nearly a 12-tone row, and developed a piano/flute piece from there, using all the 20th century dead white guy composition techniques I could think of.

I think it actually came out quite well!

Meerenai Shim (of The Mineral Kingdom) and her friend & collaborator Jacob Abela from Australia were kind enough to take some time out of their busy rehearsal schedule to record this piece for me. Jacob was in town for a series of performance with Meerenai.
