about

Chiptune creators and fans will remember with a variety of emotions the 8bitcollective days. I responded at one point to a "48 hour challenge" thread, where people would make ridiculous suggestions for a song, and you were expected to follow up by creating that song within 48 hours.

I was challenged to create a song which incorporated the following:
- Two different Lord of the Rings related songs (the title of this piece stands for "Taking the Hobbits to Eisengard")
- A song written by the person delivering the challenge (unfortunately I lost the song and the person's identity when 8bc shut down)
- salsa (the style of music, not the food)
- jumpstyle (also a style of music, which I had to google)
- my drumset

At the time I was living pretty far from my real drumset which I kept at my work, so while my wife distracted our then year-old son, I set up a tiny drumset (converted floor tom for a kick, piccolo snare, toy cymbals) in our bedroom around the corner from my recording rig, and hashed out this tune.

This track features a Game Boy Color synced to a DMG. It remains my only public use of a Game Boy Color (to handle the relatively complex playback of the percussion samples for the salsa rhythms).

A troll commented in this thread suggesting that somebody make a song in 13/8, which inspired "Dead Hand" from the MJP album "Gargantuan Acoustic Locator".
